Today is weigh-in day for 5 fighters out of the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy. The main event is Louie Coria of Moreno Valley who I wrote an article about last week and how his 12-5 record does not represent him as a boxer at all. He’s up against Alberto “Malachito” Chuc who’s fought Miguel Berchelt, Carlos Cuadras and Juan Manuel Lopez, all defeats but nonetheless he’s shared the ring with them. I believe this fight is designed to get Louie back in the wins column after some very controversial decisions in his last three outings.
Next up is undefeated Leo Ruiz from San Bernardino, CA who has been with the team for a few years and has landed on Mikey’s undercard versus Jessie Vargas. Ruiz campaigns at the junior middleweight division (154 lb) but serves as a sparring partner to many of the welterweights in his stable there in Riverside. His opponent is Alberto “Huesos” Morales and the fight will be for a total of six rounds. Hopefully this fight serves as a get back fight for Ruiz since he’s been out of the ring for 13 months.
First of the three pro debuts scheduled is Jose Manuel “Baby” Rodriguez of Indio, CA. He’s the younger brother of pro fighters Jose “Ruben” Rodriguez who is currently 10-1 and recovering from a surgery. Baby has served as a sparring partner for Mikey Garcia as Mikey prepared for southpaws Errol Spence and more recently Sandor Martin. The stable is really excited to see Baby in the ring for the first time, since he’s been part of the team for quite a few years now. He had over 100 amateur fights and only a handful of losses. Baby is up against another fighter with zero pro fights. His opponent’s name is Heriberto Cruz Lopez.
Also on the card is Erik Aguirre of Riverside, CA. Erik campaigns at the welterweight division and served as the main sparring partner for Vergil Ortiz as he prepared for his fight versus Egis Kavaliauskas. Erik has an older brother that fights at super middleweight and they started training at the gym within the last year. The coaches in the gym are excited to see how Erik performs in his pro debut. He’s up against Hector Blanco that recently lost a four round decision and has a record of 0-1-0.
Last but not least is Arturo Cardenas a super bantamweight from Sahuayo Michoacan, Mexico. He’s been with the team for some time now and has some level of olympic experience with the Mexican National team, I’m not 100% at what level, if it’s at the junior level or above. His opponent is 27 year old Damian “El Negrito” Yam that has three pro losses and no wins.
You can watch the fights Friday, October 29th on ARB Deportes Facebook page.
