This weekend was loaded with boxing fights. I was really excited to see the Conor Benn fight. My friend that watches MMA and boxing has a really good feeling about Conor Benn’s future in the welterweight division. He fought Chris Algieri who has tons of experience and has been in the ring with fighters like Ruslan Provodnikov, Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence. The fight started off really well and competitive but it was only a matter of time before Benn caught Algieri with something solid. The knockout came in the fourth round when Benn threw a one, two combination that put Algieri to sleep. I posted a tweet about how happy I was that Benn was able to refrain from hitting Algieri with a third punch on the way down to the canvas. Algieri was out on the way down and it would have just been more damage for him to receive another punch while he was already out. Benn celebrated the knockout victory but quickly that celebration came to a halt as the severity of Algieri’s health was more important than anything else. Eventually Algieri recovered from the knockdown to stand on his own two feet and respond positively to the doctor’s questions. Benn improved to 20-0 with 13 knocktouts and it will be interesting to see where he lands among the new blood that is taking over the welterweight division, the likes of Vergil Ortiz and Jaron Boots Ennis.
I really enjoyed the women’s Undisputed bout between Katie Taylor and Firuza Sharipova on Saturday. Sharipova impressed me with her grit and determination in the ring. It was a very competitive fight but I agreed with the decision in Taylor’s favor. Both fighters were undefeated going into the fight and in my opinion Sharipova never stopped trying to win the fight, she fought hard until the end. I loved listening to the instructions in Taylor’s corner, they were very concise and the trianer did a really good job explaining to Taylor what he was seeing in the ring and what he wanted her to do. It was very clear in hindsight why promotors would put an undisputed women’s bout on the card prior to a men’s non title fight as the main event. Can you imagine seeing Taylor versus Sharipova after Conor Benn knocked out Chris Algieri. It makes sense to put the most entertaining bouts where there is a possibility of a dramatic end as main events opposed to the more deserving Undisputed Championship fight.
I saw the first few rounds of Vasiliy Lomachenko versus Richard Commey and decided that I had seen enough to make a pretty accurate assessment of how the rest of the fight would go. There was a knockdown late in the fight but I had gotten up really early Saturday morning to work out and my drowsiness got the best of me. Needless to say I missed Nonito Donaire’s fourth round knockout of Reymart Gaballo and the entire Showtime card.
