Here are the names to some of the lucky participants involved in a five week camp with Robert Garcia

I’ve gotten a chance to meet all the fighters that are spending five weeks at the camp house at Robert Garcia’s gym in Riverside, CA. The first one I met was professional super middleweight from Torreon, Coahuila, Bruno Pola. He’s currently 4-0 as a pro and has had the opportunity to spar at the gym against some highly talented fighters. Second is Silvester Quiñonez of Jonestown, Texas, a city an hour north of San Antonio. He is an amateur and his goal is to turn pro this December after the five weeks at RGBA are over. He’s had the opportunity to spar Ray Muratalla that is getting ready for his fight on the undercard of Terence Bud Crawford versus Showtime Shawn Porter. In that same week he got some sparring in with an amateur fighter that was visiting the gym from Temecula Boxing. He did a total of three rounds that session. Next is Angel Avila of Dickenson, Texas near Houston. He’s an amateur fighter with 6 amateur fights and he competes at the super bantamweight (122) division. Then there’s Augustin Vasquez of Madera, CA. who is a pro fighter with one professional bout last August at the Big Punch Arena in Tijuana, Baja California, MX. He’s 27 years old and got some good sparring last Friday with RGBA’s super bantamweight pro David Navarro. Also visiting from Texas is Seth Vasquez, an amateur fighter who could potentially get down to 140, I believe he is from Midland, TX. From Durango Colorado is a heavyweight Diego Perez. From Orange County in California is Christian Bonifacio. From Arizona is a young man named Sebastian Bencomo as well. I need to ask Sebastian what his background is next time I visit the gym. The last fighter is named Christian but I don’t know much about him but I do know he has had the opportunity to spar.

This weekend Jaime Munguia showed us that he’s developing into a more polished fighter. In some of his previous fights he's fought a little wild and fought with tons of emotion. He seemed more relaxed in the ring and was putting his punches together very well. I think it was the perfect fight for Munguia to take at this point in his career, against a veteran fighter like Gabriel Rosado. Rosado is very technical and uses the clinch very well. He uses the clinch to not allow himself to get countered and he uses the clinch to hold his opponent when he himself is hurt. At one point in the fight Rosado even tackled Munguia to the ground from an excessive clinch, luckily nobody was hurt. I really liked how Joe Habeeb described the fight, he said Rosado was doing well but not enough to win the rounds. I want to add, that Munguia’s power did not deter Rosado from fighting forward the majority of the bout, even in the championship rounds. Rosado is not known for his power and he definitely landed some of his power shots on Munguia as Munguia’s face was marked up at the end of the night. Now you could say some of those marks are from his own gloves, and from his perrying shots from Rosado. The crowd was in Munguia’s favor but Rosado had a decent amount of fans there too, since he relocated to Los Angeles from Philadelphia recently. He trains with Freddie Roach and has opened up in a gym in Downtown LA. I’m interested in finding out just how much Erik Morales has to do with Munguia’s development or is he there more for guidance in the corner during the fights.

In Phoenix Arizona both the Benavidez brothers fought. David won his fight by TKO and older brother Jose after three years out of the ring, fought to a draw. Both fighters including their father, Jose Benavidez Sr. seemed content with the performances in the ring and were really pleased with the support they received from their hometown fans.

Next up this Saturday is Bud Crawford versus Showtime Shawn Porter in Las Vegas. On the undercard will be Esquiva Falcao from Brazil fighting Patrice Volny of Canada. Opening the PPV card is none other than lightweight sensation Ray “Danger” Muratalla of Fontana, Ca, who’s currently 12-0 with 10 knockouts. Muratalla and his older brother Gabriel definitely have this Roy Jones Jr. still to their fighting. They like to pull back and make their opponents miss and counter them with their punches. Look out for Muratalla to put on a spectacular performance.
