Kenny Porter, father of Shawn Porter threw in the towel last night to stop the fight his son was in. Shawn Porter's opponent Terence "Bud" Crawford had already dropped Shawn twice in the tenth round of the twelve round championship round. After he second knockdown, Shawn slapped the canvas with his glove several times, to show his discontent with himself. He got up to his feet and was ready to continue but his father and trainer threw in the towel. Shawn was not happy and jerked his arm away from the referee, but slowly just walked away from both the referee and his father, as to gather himself and his emotions.
In a post fight interview, Kenny Porter shared that he literally lives across the street from his son, in Las Vegas meaning he knows him better than anybody. The most controversial statement came next, Kenny shared that it was Shawn's failure to prepare and train to his level of satisfaction that forced his hand in throwing in the towel. Many on social media easily put themselves in Kenny's shoes and say things like, let your son go out on his shield, let your son finish the fight etc.
Shawn Porter announced his retirement from boxing last night. It was at the post fight press conference that he told the world that was his last fight. Did that play a part in his father's decision to stop the fight? Does Shawn being a father and husband play a part in Kenny throwing in the towel? What some may not know is that Kenny as a child suffered from a very tragic family accident. As a young boy Kenny watched his brother run over by a car, where his brother didn't survive. Kenny Porter has his way of training his son and over the years with so many big fights and camps, it seems like the camera was always rolling. Kenny has never shied away from being authentic with how he talks and interacts with son.
I wish the Porter's well, both Kenny and Shawn. Shawn has been doing an excellent job doing commentary for Fox Premiere Boxing Champions over the last few years.
This won't be the last time we see a trainer throw in the towel to stop a fight. Recently we saw Mark Breland lose his job as trainer for throwing in the towel on Deontay Wilder's fight versus Tyson Fury. Other times we see father's heavily criticized for not saving their son's from themselves in the ring. One thing is for sure in this life, you can't satisfy everyone. Whether you throw it in too early or don't throw it in at all, you'll be judged for your actions. Do what's right for you so that you can sleep at night and let the cards lay where they may.
