Another day at the office for Robert Garcia & his team of trainers, helping multiple pros get ready

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

I had the opportunity to stop at Robert Garcia’s gym yesterday and saw the afternoon shift of fighters work out and spar. The morning shift was already done which included Josesito Lopez that is scheduled to fight on February 5th in Las Vegas at the Michelob Ultra Arena on Fox PPV versus Abel Ramos. Also done with their workouts was Lightweight contender Hector Tanajara of Texas and bantamweight prospect Arturo “Sahuayo” Cardenas.

When I walked in, Heavyweight Antonio Mireles of Iowa was sparring Efren “Homie” Aguirre in the main ring of the gym. Gabriel Muratalla Jr. was finishing up his workout, he’s a boxer with a record of 6-0, he competes at the super bantamweight division and is out of Fontana, CA. Mireles is scheduled to fight on the undercard of Jose Ramirez versus Jose Pedraza at the Savemart Center in Fresno, CA. Mireles pro debuted not too long ago on a Top Rank show in San Diego, CA on ESPN. The gym has not trained a heavyweight in a few years but the gym has added some new trainers to help with the over 30 fighters the gym is responsible for training. Newly added to the team but not a stranger to Robert Garcia is Art Tovar of Oxnard, CA. He completes the team of 4 trainers, helping Robert, Robert Jr. (Pita) and Jose (Chepe) Contreras. Eduardo Garcia, also known as the Big G, keeps a very close eye on the gym and makes almost daily appearances to make sure things are running smoothly. He’s officially retired but last year Robert brought him out to several shows to help the Big G deal with the loss of his wife.

Jose Ramirez and his strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist Charles Trembley walked in around 2pm in the afternoon. Jose warmed up and got his hands wrapped and got ready for a day of sparring. He’s about four weeks away from his scheduled bout and he worked a total of 8 rounds of sparring with two different boxers, he hit the body shield with Art for a few rounds then finished the day with strength and conditioning with Mini flyweight sensation Bam Rodriguez of San Antonio, Texas and Ray Muratalla of Fontana, CA. Bam has no scheduled fight date but is staying ready as he can possibly be fighting for a title eliminator soon and Ray will be fighting on the undercard of Jose Ramirez versus Jose Pedraza in Fresno next month.

The team of Robert Garcia went 40-8 in the year of 2021 and Robert shared with me that it wasn’t one of his best years but he looks to have a better 2022.
